With less than a month until the American elections, the Trump campaign is investing in secure technology to prevent hacking incidents at the November polls. To bolster its cybersecurity, the campaign has partnered with military kit supplier Green Hills Software, which provides phones and computers designed to be un-hackable. This move comes in response to previous breaches where pro-Iranian attackers stole emails and sensitive data.
Green Hills Software claims that its systems are immune to intrusion attempts. The company has also offered this technology to the Harris campaign, showcasing its commitment to securing political communications. Their devices operate on the Green Hills Integrity-178B operating system, used in advanced military aircraft like the B-2 bomber, F-22, and F-35 fighters.
CEO Dan O’Dowd emphasized the security measures in place. He stated that the operating system comprises around 10,000 lines of code, all rigorously penetration tested by a dedicated team. O’Dowd noted, “I’ve had staff complaining that they can’t find enough bugs,” highlighting their thorough approach to identifying vulnerabilities.
Currently, Green Hills Software focuses on high-profile clients, building a billion-dollar business by providing secure operating systems for the military and law enforcement. O’Dowd explained, “We spend thousands of dollars reviewing every line of code. Everything is security Day 1, 2, and 10 without being checked.”
The firm claims its software can resist zero-click commercial surveillance tools, such as those used by the NSO Group. According to them, these phones “never fail and can’t be hacked.” However, this assertion could attract the attention of both malicious hackers and white-hat security experts. While Green Hills believes in its robustness, history shows that no software is entirely immune to dedicated attacks.
Furthermore, the CEO stressed the importance of extending this level of security to election systems. “We must also ensure that the same level of security and reliability used in nuclear systems be applied to voting machines,” he stated. This underscores the critical role of securing the electoral process.
As the American elections approaches, Green Hills will face scrutiny regarding the effectiveness of its claims. The spotlight will be on whether its technology can genuinely provide the security it promises during this crucial time.
