The iOS 18.2 beta will have a new look for your Mail inbox. But if you don’t like the new look or are expecting Apple to make changes during the beta process, Mail makes it easy to switch back to the familiar list view.
First, let’s talk about the restructuring of Mail in iOS 18.2. Apple now divides your inbox into four categories: Primary, Transactional, Updates, and Promotions. The primary location is the inbox, where most emails land, but receipts, orders, and deliveries end up being transactional. Updates contain newsletters, subscriptions, and other social-related news, while Promotions contain offers and emails about sales.
Note that time-sensitive messages received will appear in your primary inbox even if they are classified as transactional, update, or promotional.
The idea behind the Mail redesign is to make your inbox more organized and easier to find messages. But the new look certainly won’t be to everyone’s taste. Some people might not like the way messages are split up, while others might want it to be more obvious that new messages are in a specific inbox. However, not everyone likes the wind of change that blows with new updates.
Whatever the reason, you can get back to the list view of your emails in three easy steps:
1. Launch the Mail app
Tap the Mail app icon to launch it.
2. Select the More menu
Select the More button in the top-right corner of the Mail app.
Each of your four email inboxes has a button with three dots in the top-right corner. This is the Details button. Tapping the Details button will change the layout of the Mail app.
3. Select List View from the layout options to return to List View and change the layout of the Mail app. When you tap the Details button, a popup window will appear showing you two layouts for Mail: Category and List View. To revert to the old look of Mail, select List View.
By the way, if you’re using Mail on an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, there’s another item in the More popup that lets you view priority messages. Apple Intelligence identifies emails that have due dates or calls to action in mind. . This menu option doesn’t appear on iPhones that don’t support Apple Intelligence.
