In today’s technological era, nearly every organization faces the threat of cyberattacks. According to Check Point Research, the last two years have seen the highest levels of global cyberattacks, with organizations experiencing more cyber crimes compared to previous years. As a result, cybersecurity experts are essential for analyzing and securing information stored on an organization’s network.

Digital forensics involves investigating, analyzing, reporting, and documenting cyber crimes. Unlike cybersecurity, which focuses on preventing attacks, digital forensics takes place after an incident to understand what occurred. It encompasses the collection, analysis, and reporting of various types of electronic data, ensuring it is preserved for presentation in a court of law.

In this article, we will be breaking down the basics of digital forensics, its various processes, and its importance in cybersecurity.

Digital forensics is a part of forensic science that deals with the analysis, recovery, and investigation of information found in digital devices. Just like how a detective digs around a crime scene to discover evidence about a crime event. That is how digital forensic experts dig around digital devices to investigate cybercrimes. These experts can help recover deleted and hidden information.

Additionally, it is used to investigate cybercrimes but can also help with criminal as well as civil investigations. Digital forensics plays a huge role in criminal investigations, civil disputes, and corporate security, providing invaluable insights into digital evidence. In recent times, digital forensics has expanded to other aspects of life, thereby aiding in the overall safety of cyberspace.

Understanding the basics of digital forensics: steps of execution

  1. Identification: This is the first step where the need for forensic investigation is recognized. It might be triggered by a crime, a civil situation, or a corporate security incident.
  2. Preservation: The digital evidence should remain authentic and protected from contamination. Therefore, this involves isolating the device or system from the network and creating an exact image.
  3. Acquisition: This stage involves creating a forensic image of the digital device or system. This image is a complete and accurate replica of the original data, preserving its integrity and providing a foundation for further analysis.
  4. Analysis: In this stage, the investigator analyses the image in order to extract relevant information and create a narrative of what really occurred. This may involve examining files, searching for keywords, reconstructing timelines, or analysing network traffic.
  5. Presentation: This is the final stage. The findings from the analysis are presented clearly and concisely. This often involves creating reports, providing expert testimony, or presenting evidence in court.

Each of these stages requires specialised tools, techniques, and expertise to ensure that the investigation is conducted effectively.

Understanding the Basics of Digital Forensics: The Importance

More digital devices mean more digital crime. With the way the world is becoming digitalised, cybercrimes and cyberattacks are now on the rise. All organisations are at risk of cyberattacks, whether they are malware attacks or information sabotage. These cybercrimes pose a lot of risk to both individuals and organisations, hence, the need for cybersecurity.

Digital forensics and cybersecurity are similar but have distinctive features. While cybersecurity is based on protecting networks from cyberattacks, digital forensics focuses on tracing and investigating cyberattacks to get to the root of the problem. However, digital forensics has become a very prominent factor in the fight against cyberattacks.

The role of digital forensics

#1. Incident response

When a cyberattack occurs, digital forensics helps to identify the source of the attack, understand its scope and impact, and gather evidence to hold attackers accountable. By analysing digital footprints, investigators can reconstruct the timeline of events and determine how the attackers gained access to the system. This information is crucial for containing the attack, preventing further damage and implementing effective recovery measures.

#2. Threat Intelligence

Digital forensics can provide valuable insights into the tactics, techniques, and procedures (TTPs) used by cybercriminals. Forensic investigators examine malware samples, analyze network traffic logs, and recover deleted files to spot patterns and trends. By doing this, they can enhance cybersecurity defenses. This threat intelligence helps them create targeted security measures and proactively identify potential vulnerabilities.

#3. Compliance

Many industries have regulatory requirements that mandate the preservation and analysis of digital evidence in case of a security breach. Digital forensics ensures that organisations can comply with these regulations and avoid legal repercussions.

#4. Evidence collection

Digital forensics plays a critical role in collecting and preserving electronic evidence that can be used in legal proceedings. This evidence can be used to prosecute cyber criminals, recover stolen data, and resolve civil disputes.

Here are some of the key benefits of digital forensics in cybersecurity:

  • Preserves Evidence: Digital forensics ensures that digital evidence is collected and preserved in a way that maintains its integrity and admissibility in court.
  • Identifies Attackers: By analysing digital evidence, investigators can identify the attackers and their methods, which can be crucial for bringing them to justice.
  • Protects Corporate Interests: Digital forensics can help organisations protect their intellectual property, financial data, and other sensitive information from cyberattacks.
  • Assists in Investigations: Digital forensics provides valuable evidence that can be used to investigate cybercrimes and identify the perpetrators.
  • Provides Insights for Improvement: By analysing the findings of a digital forensics investigation, organisations can gain valuable insights into their cybersecurity vulnerabilities and take steps to improve their defences.

Wrap-Up: Understanding the Basics of Digital Forensics

Digital forensics is a globally embraced technological approach that’s here to stay. As cyberattacks rise each year, digital forensic experts must sharpen their skills to tackle these threats. With technology advancing rapidly, digital forensics will keep playing a vital role in safeguarding systems and networks.

Additionally, digital forensics extends beyond just digital devices. It has effectively solved real-life investigations in the physical world as well. Since nearly everything we do is digitized, gathering information about various aspects of life becomes easier.
