In a welcome move, Starlink has suspended its planned price increment for its internet services in Nigeria. The decision follows a wave of regulatory concerns and feedback from users, as the company strives to balance customer satisfaction with operational demands.
Temporary Halt on Starlink Price Increase
In a message sent to subscribers, Starlink explained that the planned hike, which took effect in early October, would be temporarily reversed. The internet provider initially raised prices to adjust for inflation but has now chosen to address regulatory issues first. Starlink emphasized its commitment to offering high-speed internet across Nigeria, noting that regulatory approvals are crucial for maintaining and improving service delivery.
The company said, “Last month, we increased the monthly service price for Starlink in Nigeria to account for inflation, helping us maintain operations and continue delivering reliable service. Today, we are temporarily suspending this price increase as we navigate regulatory challenges.”
Regulatory Pushback
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) raised concerns about the price hike, stating that Starlink had not obtained necessary approval to increase rates. In response, the company suspended the increment, preventing a possible compliance breach with local regulations.

Initially, Starlink had doubled its monthly subscription price from ₦38,000 ($24) to ₦75,000 ($48) for its standard residential plan, which offers a 1TB fair usage policy. Prices for regional and international roaming had also seen significant jumps, with international roaming soaring to ₦717,000 ($448) per month.
To cushion the impact on customers who were already charged at the higher rate, Starlink has offered a one-time credit refund to cover the price difference. The company also reassured users that they have the flexibility to cancel their subscriptions at any time, further demonstrating its responsiveness to customer concerns.
A Competitive Landscape
While Starlink is making these adjustments in Nigeria, it has increased prices in other African markets, including Zimbabwe. Despite the price hike, Starlink has triggered a transformation in Zimbabwe’s telecommunications industry, forcing local internet service providers (ISPs) to slash prices to compete with the satellite giant’s high-speed service.
As Starlink continues to navigate regulatory and market challenges, its commitment to delivering affordable and reliable internet services remains at the forefront, ensuring that millions of Nigerians stay connected in an increasingly digital world.
