An Apple advertising engineer filed a lawsuit against his employer on Sunday, alleging that the company is monitoring employees, Semafor reported.
Apple wants employees to use Apple devices for work. However, employers provide very limited devices, so many employees use personal devices or tether their work devices to a private iCloud. To do this, employees must allow Apple to install software that gives them access to search all data stored on the device or in iCloud, according to the complaint. The complaint alleges that Apple’s policies allow it to monitor employees outside of work hours. The employee claims that Apple used its policies to damage his employment prospects.
The case highlights some of the challenges facing many corporate employees: How much access should employers have to personal devices used for work, and how much control should they have over personal behaviour rules? If Apple loses, it could curb the growing trend of bossware in the workplace. Apple told Semafor that it strongly disagrees with the lawsuit’s allegations.
