Mr Mele Kyari, Group CEO of NNPC Ltd, has reiterated the company’s resolve to solve Nigeria’s energy situation by ensuring energy security, sustainable growth and affordable energy. Mr Kyari disclosed this on Monday at the opening ceremony of the 42nd Annual International Conference and Exhibition of the Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorators (NAPE) themed “Solving Nigeria’s Energy Trilemma: Energy Security, Sustainable Growth and Affordable Energy” in Lagos. The GCEO, who was also the guest of honour at the event, said NNPC has drawn up plans to launch 12 CNG mother stations and mini LNG plants as part of efforts to expand existing gas supplies to the domestic market, with an estimated 1.6 billion cubic feet of gas.
“The energy trilemma is a huge responsibility we bear as custodians of Nigeria’s energy future. “NNPC Ltd is working tirelessly to improve our supply chain, develop new refining capacity and expand our retail network,” Mr Kyari said.
According to him, NNPC Ltd will work with private refineries to ensure affordable and sustainable supply of petroleum products. The trade of crude oil for the naira is aimed at stabilizing the local currency and regulating the foreign exchange market.
This, he added, will lead to the expansion of gas infrastructure such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas Pipeline and the Obiafu-Oblicom-Obeng (OB3) Gas Pipeline, as well as the development of clean energy options such as Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG).
“Currently, NNPC Ltd supplies over 1.6 billion standard cubic feet (bscf) of gas per day to the domestic market through infrastructure we either own outright or operate with partners. This distribution network is entirely managed on NNPC Ltd.’s balance sheet,” Kyari added.
Managing Director, NNPC Ltd explained that the company is scaling up efforts to improve energy access in the country. He said key projects including CNG parent stations, mini LNG plants and additional CNG auxiliary stations would be commissioned within the next three to six months.
Kyari commended President Tinubu for easing exchange pressures by reducing fuel imports and strengthening Nigeria’s local refining capacity, and stressed the need for collaboration, innovation and technology to achieve Nigeria’s energy goals.
On NNPC Ltd’s mission to ensure energy security under the Petroleum Industry Act, Kyari said the company is fostering partnerships and investments aimed at increasing local energy production and generating revenue for diversifying the economy.
Reacting to allegations that NNPC Ltd is sabotaging domestic refinery efforts, Kyari said NNPC Ltd is a co-owner of Dangote Refinery, further stressing that such investments are strategic measures to enhance domestic fuel supply.
