The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has raised concerns about the recent Starlink price increment, which the company implemented without approval. Dr. Reuben Muoka, NCC’s Director of Public Affairs, criticized the sudden increase, noting that Starlink had requested a price adjustment but acted before the Commission could respond. “We were surprised that the company jumped the gun by announcing price changes after filing a request, for which the Commission was yet to communicate a decision,” he said.
ALTON responds
In a follow up response, the Association of Licensed Telecommunication Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has called Starlink’s move a serious breach of regulatory standards. ALTON’s Chairman, Gbenga Adebayo, condemned the price increase, stressing that the telecom sector is strictly regulated. He explained that operators are expected to follow NCC’s guidelines before making such decisions. According to him, Starlink filed for approval but failed to wait for the necessary clearance before implementing the change.
Starlink, backed by SpaceX, has been growing rapidly, especially in Africa, due to its faster internet speeds and broader coverage. Despite its success, the company’s decision to raise prices without regulatory approval has drawn the ire of both customers and industry stakeholders.
NCC, though initially planning to sanction Starlink, has since held back. However, many expect the commission to take corrective action, as Starlink’s disregard for regulatory procedures undermines compliance. Stakeholders are urging NCC to ensure the protection of consumers and uphold fair regulatory practices.
Nigerians are still waiting for updates from the NCC regarding whether any penalties will be enforced. Many customers, already burdened by economic challenges, have voiced frustration over the price hike, adding pressure on the commission to act decisively. How the NCC handles this situation could set a critical precedent for how telecom companies in Nigeria adjust prices and communicate with customers in the future.
