OpenAI has launched an early version of its ChatGPT app for Windows, offering select users the ability to access the platform directly from their desktops. This release is now available to ChatGPT Plus, Enterprise, Team, and Educational (Edu) subscribers, with broader access expected later this year.
The new ChatGPT desktop app aims to improve user experience. It includes the Alt + Space shortcut, allowing users to quickly open ChatGPT without leaving their current tasks. Other key features include file and photo uploads for AI analysis, document summarization, and image creation using DALL-E 3.
However, the app has some limitations. Unlike the macOS version, it doesn’t yet support voice functionality. Additionally, OpenAI’s GPT Store integrations are not available on the Windows app at this stage. Despite this, users still get access to the advanced OpenAI o1-preview model.
One of the benefits of the Windows version is its broad compatibility. It runs on most devices with Windows 10 version 17763.0 or higher, making it accessible to a wider range of users compared to the macOS version, which requires an Apple Silicon machine with the latest OS.
OpenAI plans to expand free access to the ChatGPT desktop app by the end of the year. For now, users can download the ChatGPT app from the Microsoft Store and expect regular updates as OpenAI works towards a full release.
