In a groundbreaking yet controversial move, a Polish radio station, OFF Radio Krakow, has replaced its human journalists with AI-generated presenters. This marks the first experiment of its kind in Poland. This shift has sparked heated debate about the future of media and journalism.
Located in the southern city of Krakow, the station introduced three virtual avatars to lead its broadcasts, covering topics like culture, art, and social issues, including the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community. The decision to replace human journalists with AI presenters in Poland was part of an effort to attract younger listeners, according to station officials.
Nationwide Controversy and Backlash
However, this move hasn’t come without controversy. Former station journalist Mateusz Demski voiced his strong disapproval through an open letter where he criticized the replacement of experienced journalists with machines. Demski, a film critic and former host at the station, stated that the change “sets a dangerous precedent” for the media industry. He warned it could lead to the displacement of long-standing professionals in creative sectors by AI.
His protest quickly gained traction, with over 15,000 signatures on a petition by Wednesday, and many young listeners expressing their concern about being part of such an experiment.
OFF Radio Krakow’s director, Marcin Pulit, defended the decision, citing poor audience numbers as the reason for letting go of the journalists, rather than the AI integration itself. According to Pulit, the station’s listenership had dropped to nearly zero, prompting the need for drastic changes to revive interest.
Despite these claims, the station’s reliance on AI presenters has stirred national debate in Poland about the broader implications of artificial intelligence in media. Krzysztof Gawkowski, Poland’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, voiced his concerns, calling for legislation to regulate AI. Gawkowski, while supportive of AI innovation, believes “certain boundaries are being crossed” and emphasized that AI should benefit people, not work against them.
The Future of Journalism in an AI-Driven Era
As AI continues to make strides in various industries, the replacement of human journalists with AI-generated avatars raises serious concerns about the future of creative jobs. While AI can automate many tasks, its role in industries that rely on human intuition, creativity, and experience—like journalism—remains controversial.
With this experiment in Krakow, the debate over AI’s role in media has only just begun, leaving many to question whether AI will revolutionize or jeopardize the future of journalism.
