Meta Platforms (META, financials) plans to introduce advertising to its text-based social platform, Threads, starting in early 2025, The Information reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
The project is still in its early stages but is being led by a team within Instagram’s advertising division. Threads will allow a small number of marketers to create content and post to the platform in January, according to people familiar with the matter.
As of October, Threads had about 275 million monthly active users. During the company’s third-quarter earnings call, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said about 1 million people log into Threads every day.
In addition to increasing advertising in threads, Meta is investing heavily in artificial intelligence (AI) and augmented reality (AR). The company recently unveiled “Orion,” an advanced prototype of holographic AR glasses that weighs less than 100 grams and features a neural interface on the wrist. While a release date is still unknown, the advancement highlights Meta’s commitment to next-generation computing systems.
To reduce reliance on external search sources, Meta is also developing an artificial intelligence-based search engine. Across Meta’s platforms, including WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook, the new search engine aims to provide consumers with conversational commentary on current events.
These projects reflect Meta’s broad approach to diversifying its products and integrating cutting-edge technologies into its business.
