Nigerian digital bank Carbon is relaunching its card services for the first time in six months, after ceasing to offer debit cards in June 2024. The hiatus comes just two years after Carbon first launched the card as a key part of its transition from a lender to a fully digital bank, aimed at offering customers greater convenience through quicker access to funds.
But with rising costs from international card providers and the distribution system not running as smoothly as hoped, Carbon re-evaluated and temporarily retreated.
Now, with a refined card distribution process, Carbon is relaunching offer card services again and address some of the issues with its previous setup. With the rising costs of issuing options from Visa and MasterCard, many Nigerian fintech companies, including Carbon, are looking for lower-cost alternatives.
Options such as Interswitch’s Verve and CBN’s Afrigo cards are growing in popularity as they offer cheaper, locally tailored card solutions.
Carbon did not disclose which provider it is using to offer the new cards, but the relaunch reflects the company’s goal of maintaining access to its services and maintaining customer loyalty by making everyday banking more seamless.
