When Apple released iOS 16.4, the tech giant introduced a feature that significantly improves the sound quality of calls: Voice Isolation. Apple has already added Voice Isolation and Wide Spectrum to FaceTime calls in iOS 15 in 2021, but currently, only Voice Isolation is available for regular phone calls.
Turning on Voice Isolation blocks out annoying background noises that interrupt your phone conversations. That way, you won’t be interrupted by barking dogs or construction in front of your house while you’re on a work call or meeting up with friends.
To enable Voice Isolation, you need to have an active phone conversation as the feature isn’t in Settings. After you enable Voice Isolation, it stays on for all future calls unless you manually turn it off.
How to enable or disable Voice Isolation for a call.
How to turn on Voice Isolation
1. Tap the Phone app.
2. Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to access Control Center.
3. Tap Phone Controls at the top of the screen.
4. Tap “Audio Isolation.”
To turn off Audio Isolation, follow the same steps as above, but tap Default in the Phone controls. This will reset your microphone to its default setting.
What is “Wide Spectrum”?
In addition to Audio Isolation, the Phone controls also have Wide Spectrum. Unlike Voice Isolation, which attenuates background noise, Wide Spectrum amplifies background noise without affecting your voice.
Wide Spectrum is useful when you call multiple people on one phone line. This way, you can hear everyone, not just the person calling.
Currently, Wide Spectrum is only available for FaceTime calls. The feature is still present in Phone Controls, so it may be available for Phone in the future.
