On Monday, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) became the first individual account with 1 million followers on Bluesky. The decentralized platform has seen a huge surge in usage since the US election, with its user base tripling in three months. As for why, AOC wrote in a recent post about Elon Musk: “This is not rocket science. People are leaving Twitter because it’s not fun anymore and no one is obligated to be on a platform they don’t enjoy.”
AOC has been active on the platform long before the post-election surge, posting 437 times since joining the platform in April 2023. Her profile reads: “From waitress to Bronx and Queens Congresswoman.” “Elected from the grassroots and supported by small amounts of money, a better world is possible.”
Bluesky’s account remains the most popular on the platform, with nearly 17 million followers at the time of publishing. But AOC’s 1,032,729 users make her the largest individual. She’s followed by George Takei with 862,646 followers and Mark Hamill with 797,541 followers. After all, being part of the iconic “Star…” series and having a funny, sharp, socially conscious perspective proved to be worth it.
The top publication is The Onion (769,718), followed by The New York Times (762,499), showing that satire is perhaps the most trusted news source today. Blatant Advertising:
