Amazon is considering increasing its investment in OpenAI competitor Anthropic. Anthropic is responsible for the release of Claude AI.
According to The Information, Amazon is in talks to make a multibillion-dollar investment in Anthropic, its first financial commitment to the company since a $4 billion deal last year. The new plan to invest is structured similarly to the previous one, but with one special feature: Amazon wants Anthropic to use Amazon-developed silicon hosted on Amazon Web Services to train its AI.
Anthropic prefers Nvidia chips. But the money may be too good to pass up. Earlier this year, Anthropic reportedly predicted it would spend more than $2.7 billion in 2024 to train and scale its AI products. The Information reported that Anthropic has been in talks for months about raising new capital at a $40 billion valuation, so the pressure is no doubt on to get something done soon.
To date, Anthropic has raised $9.7 billion, nearly half of OpenAI’s $21.9 billion.
