Chinese technology giant Huawei Technologies (HWT.UL) unveiled its Mate 70 series of smartphones on Tuesday, unveiling its operating system, differentiating it from U.S. technology while further propelling its comeback in the premium smartphone sector.
The phone is “the most powerful Mate phone ever,” Huawei’s consumer business group chairman Richard Yu said at an event in the company’s hometown of Shenzhen.
Yu said that the Mate 70 is the first mainstream smartphone with a satellite calling system, has an improved processor, and runs Huawei’s proprietary HarmonyOS Next operating system.
The announcement came as the U.S. is expected to announce new export restrictions later this week that could blacklist up to 200 Chinese chipmakers and restrict access to U.S. suppliers, Reuters reported on Saturday.
Huawei doesn’t typically talk about chip advances at product launch events because improvements tend to be discovered later by teardown companies.
