WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new way to let users view and join channels on the platform by scanning QR codes. The next feature is currently in development and aims to make it easier for users to discover and follow new channels.
According to a recent report from WABetaInfo, the new feature is currently available to users who are using the latest WhatsApp beta version for Android and iOS. Scanning the QR code with the phone’s camera will direct users to the channel, where they can browse and join if it matches their interests.
To access a channel’s QR code, users need to go to the channel and tap on the three vertical dots button at the top right to go to the sharing menu. Here, they’ll find the option to generate and display a QR code that acts as a shortcut to the channel.
Compared to the traditional modus operandi, which requires copying and pasting a link into a chat, the new method is more convenient, especially when you’re in front of the person you want to join.
It’s even more convenient for business owners, as QR codes can be printed on business cards, posters, flyers, and more. However, like most features currently in beta, it remains to be seen whether this feature will be rolled out to the stable channel. WhatsApp has introduced several new features recently such as the ability to transcribe voice messages, and another feature that lets you add custom messages when forwarding text, images, or links.
